Planar films are an innovative solution to device problems that require high-speed, continuously-varying polarization rotation with applied field. The magnetic properties of these films are ideal for sensors, where the film is required to have a sensitive response at low fields, and photonic devices, where a linear response to applied fields and low insertion loss are critical. Potential photonic devices for telecommunications and military applications include variable optical attenuators, polarization controllers and increased speed magnetooptic switches. Planar materials have much higher switching speeds than conventional perpendicular Faraday rotators and would permit a magnetooptical approach to packet switching.
